Residential Roofing Knowledge

Asphalt Shingles - Is the most common roofing material you will see on residences in this country. Asphalt shingles consist of many layers, and offer various levels of durability and manufacture warranties.
Wood Shingles and Shakes - These are made from cedar, redwood, southern pine and other woods. They offer a very great look on your residence that will make your house stand out.
Tile - Made of clay or concrete, tile is very durable. It can add a spanish or modern look to your home, that can last a life time.
Slate - Considered virtually indestructible, slate is a very nice material to have on your home. It gives your home a clean and modern look that can last for a long time.
Metal-Metal shingles are being made to simulate traditional house roof coverings. They are long lasting, relatively light, fire resistant, and can save you money on your energy bills.
Synthetic - There are several line of synthetic systems (slate, tile) that resemble certain kinds of roofing materials.

Residential Roofing Terms

Alpine Roofing Construction wants our customers to be informed. Here are a few more roofing terms to increase your residential roofing knowledge

A. Roof-The upper exterior surface of a home--shingles, tiles, metal, etc.


B. Fascia-A flat horizontal band around a roof's perimeter.


C. Boxed Eave-An overhang enclosed with a soffit that runs horizontally from the eave edge to the side of the building.


D. Cornice- The decorative section just below the roofline. The roof cornice may be simple or ornate depending on building style.


E. Rake- The pitch edge of a gable roof. Roofs may be close, or extend from the building to allow for an overhang.



Pitch- The degree of slope, steepness, of the roof from the ridge to the eave or valley.


Low Slope- A roof angle or pitch that is less than 30 degrees.


Normal Slope- A roof angle or pitch that is between 30 to 45 degrees.


Steep Slope- A roof angle that is greater than 45 degrees.
